Community Police Officer - PC Roger Smith

Cogenhoe Neighbourhood Watch was set up by a group of concerned villagers in 1996 after a significant number of burglaries occurred in a very short period of time. There was a strong feeling that someone ought to do something!

The objective of Neighbourhood Watch is crime prevention and crime reduction.

Cogenhoe is a relatively small village so communication between residents at a personal level is possible. Old-fashioned gossip used to be a way of spreading information; this is formalised through the Neighbourhood Watch. Initially a network of representatives was set up to pass information by telephone, this is now complemented by email.

Cogenhoe Neighbourhood Watch is divided into six areas:

· Mill Lane/Church Street
· Station Road East
· Station Road West
· Nene Rise/St. Peter's Way
· Glebe Road/Glebe Way
· Orchard Way

Each area has its own representatives who can report any unusual or suspicious activities, which might not in themselves warrant a call direct to the police, to the coordinator. He then collates and keeps the information until there is sufficient to brief the Community Police Officer. The police also have an automatic messaging system that sends details of any crimes and descriptions of suspects in the area to the coordinator. This information is passed round the network. The result is a rapid collation and spread of information about crime and anti social behaviour, making villagers and police aware of current and potential problems in the village.

If you would like to be involved or wish to find out more, please contact Colin Irvine, Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator.
